    Celebrating the Emerson Quartet in this their final season. Catch them on their Farewell Tour, if you can! Remembering the epic near-nightly concerts the Fall of '81 and '82 when you guys were in Residence with HCRL, Haydn and Beethoven... Every note of every composition by each and every composer you all have played over the decades has been: definitive. Props and love, Andrea Wallenberger (Middlebury College Class of 1985)

    I started attending the Emerson String Quartet concerts in D.C. when they were playing at the Renwick Gallery (before the Smithsonian Inst. venue). I've seen every concert in D.C. since then, including their recent Farewell Concert at the Wolf Trap Barns. I am a big fan, to say the least. I will miss them very much and wish them all success and happiness in their new lives after retirement as a quartet. Thank you Emerson.

    Ugh... tired of these old guys, who used to be great, just spitting out whatever now... no musicality, no care for intonation. They just rush on through beautiful music without a trace of feeling. Unfortunately this lady has followed right along with the crap. She brought zero grace or style to these wonderful cello parts, especially in the Gliere; so disappointing. Sorry guys, this sucked. A MUCH better performance here : ruclips.net/video/YCEKqjKZ8rE/видео.html

      @@gunygumundsdottir3236 I understand the truth is hard to hear about those we love. And yes, I most definitely performed this same concert better musically and technically, many times over the years. And so has Mr. Zukerman. And as I age, my technique slips little by little, as well. But like with this concert here, that is no excuse for butchering it without care whatsoever. Obviously if I produced proof of that to you guys, you would reject it. It hurts your sensibilities, and you have a right to that. I also have a right to my opinion, and a right to express it. I’m old, too. And I have produced students you’ve heard perform incredible concerts for 3 decades. I will always be truthful, so that students the world over can know that what they may hear in their own ears is correct, even when the rest of the room wants to ignore the naked emperor.

    When it's my time to go, I want the last thing I hear to be the slow movement of this quartet.

  • @davidyoung6331
    @davidyoung6331 7 лет назад

    Beautiful Rendition!There is a very curious thing about this movement. There is a set of published parts where there is an error in the transcription of the viola in two measures (four measures before and three measures before rehearsal number "8"). There is another publisher who has published the parts correctly. The Orion String Quartet plays this correctly, according to the score. So does the Amadeus Quartet, the Cleveland Quartet, The Prazak Quartet, the Prague Quartet, the American Quartet and many, many others. But a few famous quartets, such as the Emerson Quartet, play from parts where there is the mistake. Other, new ensembles, such as the Fry Street Quartet and the Crimson Quartet play from the tainted parts. The place in the music in question can be heard between 2:09 and 2:11 here. In this rendition, the Orion String Quartet has all four instruments play, in 2/4 time signature, for two measures, the rhythm "8th note, 8th rest, 8th rest, 8th note." which is what Dvorak wrote. In the wrongly prepared parts, the two violins and cello play that rhythm but the viola plays (on a low f) "8th note, 8th rest, 8th note, 8th rest." So, the second beat of each of those two measures, the viola comes on in right on the second beat whereas the other instruments play off the second beat. The Orion plays it correctly here, but listen to the Emerson play it, and you can hear the difference.A 1928 recording of the Czech Quartet on RUclips plays it correctly but a 1940 rendition by the Budapest Quartet, found here on RUclips has the "error". I am doing a little music detective work here. Orion fellows.... are you aware of this mistake in other recordings? Who was the publisher of your parts? After 80 years of this error existing, am I the only musician to notice it?

    • @davidyoung6331
      @davidyoung6331 7 лет назад

      I have learned more about the altered viola part since I posted this a month ago. When Dvorak wrote the score, he was sloppy in writing those two measures that I mention above. Early on, the viola part was printed so that the viola plays a different rhythm than the other three strings during those two measures. It was brought to his attention and he recommended that all four strings play the same rhythm, as you hear in this rendition of the quartet by the skilled Orion String Quartet. The full score was correct, but the alternative viola part has persisted in some published parts, including those published by Kalmus, for example. I would be curious to learn from which publisher that Orion Quartet got the parts from.
